The science

Why "1 dog year = 7 human years" is wrong

Dogs don't age linearly. They mature very fast in the first two years and then slow dramatically. A 1-year-old Labrador is more like a 30-year-old human than a 7-year-old child. Our calculator uses the same 2019 epigenetic study that veterinary researchers now reference.

  1. 01
    Epigenetic formula
    16 × ln(dog age) + 31. Most accurate, especially for adults.
  2. 02
    Breed-size method
Adjusts aging by adult weight. Trusted by the AKC and most vets.
  3. 03
    Life-stage detection
Identifies puppy, adult, senior or geriatric stages by size.
  4. 04
    Classic 7× rule
Kept for comparison only — useful as a quick gut-check.

Dog age calculator FAQ

How accurate is this dog age calculator?+

The epigenetic method is based on peer-reviewed 2019 research and is the most accurate for dogs aged 1 year and older. The breed-size method is the standard used by veterinarians and the American Kennel Club.

Why does breed size matter?+

Large and giant breeds reach maturity slightly later but age much faster afterwards. A 7-year-old Great Dane is biologically older than a 7-year-old Chihuahua.

Is the classic 1=7 rule wrong?+

Yes. It assumes dogs age uniformly, which they don't. We include it only because it's still widely searched.

Do you store my dog's information?+

No. Everything runs in your browser — we don't track, save, or share any inputs.
